Ventura County Red Devils (VCRD) was founded in 2005 by 1996 Olympian Ben Maruquin with a bold vision: to build a premier high-performance boys field hockey program. Based in Moorpark, California—a city with a rich tradition in field hockey—VCRD quickly rose to national prominence, developing some of the most accomplished players in U.S. Men’s Field Hockey history from 2005 to 2014.
In 2016, former U.S. Men’s National Team captain Shawn Nakamura (1997–2012) took over the program and began a new chapter by integrating a girls program. Over the next five years, VCRD expanded its impact, producing elite men’s players and top-tier Division 1 female athletes.
In 2021, leadership was passed to Paul Singh, a former USMNT player and original VCRD athlete (2005–2011). With deep roots in the club and the local community, Paul continues to grow VCRD—building on its legacy and contributing to the proud history of the Moorpark field hockey community.
The mission of Ventura County Red Devils Field Hockey, Inc. (VCRD) is to teach young athletes respect for them- selves and their community based on the core values of fun, responsibility, sportsmanship and team work. VCRD is committed to providing high performance youth training programs and competition opportunities for boys and girls. Teaching VCRD’s core values in these programs provides an environment conducive to achieving success at the highest level possible and helps to prepare our members for collegiate and international play while also developing a life long love of the game.

We are committed to developing technically skilled, intelligent, and competitive athletes—preparing them for the highest levels of the game, from national teams to collegiate play.

Rooted in Moorpark’s rich field hockey history, we honor the legacy of those who built this program by giving back and growing the sport for future generations.

We expect our athletes to compete with respect, humility, and honesty—on and off the field.

We believe field hockey is for everyone. We provide equal opportunities for both boys and girls to learn, grow, and lead through sport.

We foster leadership through accountability, discipline, and teamwork—developing not just great athletes, but great people.
